LEE Shinuh

Lee Shinuh started her career as a composer when she took her first composition lessons with Unsuk Chin. Lee studied composition with Kang Sukhi at Seoul National University, and later with Michael Finnissy at the Royal Academy of Music, the University of London, and the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom. While she studied in the UK, Lee won a number of prizes from various competitions and music festivals, which include the Musical Times Composers’ Competition, Cornelius Cardew Composers’ Competition, and was a finalist at ISCM World Music Days, Gaudeamus Composers’ Competition, and Leonard Bernstein International Jerusalem Composing Competition. After returning to Korea, she also received Korean Composition Award, AhnEakTae Composition Award, Grand Prize for the Korean Race Composition Award, Nanpa Music Award, and the Young Artist Today Award from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Korea. She is now Professor of composition at Seoul National University
LEE Young Jo

Lee Young Jo received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Yonsei University in Seoul. He continued his studies with Carl Orff and Wilhelm Killmayer at the Hochschule fur Musik in Munchen, Germany. After receiving his Doctorate from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, he subsequently served as chairman of the Theory and Composition Department. As guest composer of the New Music Festival of the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM), he worked in Budapest, Amsterdam, and Wurzburg, Germany. He was also composer in residence at the Maastricht New Music Festival in Netherlands and Moscow. The Korean National University of Arts has invited him as a professor of composition. And, eventually he became Dean of the School of Music. Lee’s music is characterized by strong Asian feelings with German theoretical influence. His chamber music, choral music, orchestral works are well known to the Asia and United States. Opera Whang-Jinie staged in several cities such as Beijing(2000), Tokyo(2001), Los Angeles (2002), Moscow(2003) and Hanoi (2004). Currently he is the Director of the Korea National Institute for the Gifted in Arts(KIGA).
