[APPLICATION]

ELIGIBILITY

The Competition is open to painists of any nationality born on or after 2 November 1965 and no later than 1 November 1980.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

The following documents should be sent with the application form:

a) Two recent colour photographs (5.5 cm×6.5 cm, front, from the waist up)
b) A certified copy of a birth certificate or another legal document stating the applicant’s age and nationality
c) Letters of recommendation from two eminent musicians, either of whom specializes in the applicant’s discipline
d) A cassette tape on which the applicant’s performance of the whole programme for the 1st Stage given in the application form by the applicant is recorded
e) A letter from either of the musicians who write the letter of recommendation set out in c) above to certify that the performance recorded on the tape has been performed by the applicant and is unedited
1. No late application will be considered for processing.
2. No documents will be returned.
3. When forwarding applications, applicants are advised to make sure their entry is sent by AIR MAIL.

The final date for receipt of applications at the Secretariat is 20 June 1996. Applications received later than this date will not be considered.
The Preliminary Jury will be responsible for the choice of candidates from the applications received. All applicants will be advised of the acceptance or rejection of their applications before 20 August 1996.

ENTRY FEE

The applicant who has been selected to participate in the Competition must remit an entry fee of US$100 (One hundred dollars) to the bank account shown below by 20 September 1996.
The arrival of the entry fee will be considered a conclusion of a formal agreement between the candidate (competitor) and the Organizer regarding his/her participation in the Competition under the conditions set out in this brochure.
The entry fee is not refundable.

TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION

Travel expenses to and from Seoul are the responsibility of the competitors. However, non-Korean competitors who are not resident in Korea will be provided with financial aid towards their international air passage, that is 400 US dollars for those coming from Asia and 800 US dollars for those coming from outside Asia. Non-Korean competitors who are not resident in Korea will be also provided with room and board by the Organizer at the lodgings specified from 18 November until:

a) 1st Stage competitors … the morning following the last day of the 1st Stage
b) 2nd Stage competitors … the morning following the last day of the 2nd Stage
c) Semifinalists & Finalists … the morning following the final day of the Competition

All competitors are required to arrive in Seoul to register with the Secretariat in time for the drawing to decide the order of appearance in the Competition, which is scheduled for 20 November 1996.

PRACTICE

Non-Korean competitors who are not resident in Korea will be provided with a practice piano, free of charge, for three hours every day from two days before the 1st Stage is started until the Competition is finished.
Each finalist will have one rehearsal with the orchestra before the Final Stage.

PERFORMANCE RULES

The order of appearance of the competitors will be determined by a drawing on the previous day of the 1st Stage. On the day of appearance, each competitor must show up at the Secretariat office located in the concert hall by the specified time without fail. Those who are unable to perform when called upon to do so may be disqualified. However, if any competitor should be late for his/her appearance through unavoidable circumstances, the Jury may allow the competitor to perform, if he/she requests so, depending on the progress of the Competition. All works prepared for the Competition must be played from memory. The Jury has the right to interrupt any competitor who runs over the allotted time. All stages of the Competition are open to the public.

PERFORMANCE RIGHTS

While the competitors are in Korea, they will be contracted exclusively to the Competition. All approaches to the media must be made through and with the approval of the Secretariat, and the competitors will be required to be available for media calls as arranged.
The Competition has the right, without payment of fees, to:

a) Televise, broadcast, film, record, videotape or photograph all stages of the Competition for media or for any other purpose.
b) Produce and distribute without limit or payment of fees to the competitors, recordings of all stages of the Competition, either in whole or in part, including the prize winners’ concerts, recitals, and CDs offered by the Organizer as part of the prize
c) Produce documentary or feature films.

[JUDGEMENT]

A point system will be used by the Jury for judgment.
Each juror must judge and mark all performances of all competitors, but will abstain from marking the performances of the competitors who have been their own students for more than three months during the past two years.
The decisions of the Jury are final.
Competitors must not communicate with members of the Jury after the 1st Stage has started and until the Competition is finished. Any competitor who fails to comply with this rule will be disqualified and, equally, should members of the Jury communicate with a competitor, his/her status in the Competition will be endangered.

PROCUDURE OF JUDGEMENT

1. At the end of each stage, marks for each competitor’s performance will be averaged by the Secretariat in the presence of the chairman or vice-chairman of the Management Committee, and the list of averaged scores without the competitors’ names will be submitted to the chairman of the Jury.
2. The Jury will pass a certain number of the competitors who rank high in the list of averaged scores to the next Stage, and six or fewer of the semifinalists will be admitted to the Final Stage.
3. The Jury will decide the ranking order of six or fewer prize winners at the end of the Final Stage.
4. Should any of the finalists determined by the procedure set out in 2. above give up the right to participate in the Final Stage, the Jury may qualify the semifinalist who ranks highest in the list of averaged scores of the remaining semifinalists to be a finalist.
※ The Jury cannot request the chairman of the Management Committee to disclose any of the competitors’ names at any stage during the process of selecting the successful competitors for the further Stages or of determining the ranking order of the prize winners.

PRIZES

There will be cash-prizes in total of US $122,000.
First Prize: US $50,000 and a Gold medal
Second Prize: US $30,000 and a Silver medal
Third Prize: US $20,000 and a Bronze medal
Fourth Prize: US $10,000
Fifth Prize: US $7,000
Sixth Prize: US $5,000

• The Jury reserves the right to withhold an award.
• In the case of a tie, the prize money for the prize concerned and that of the following prize in the ranking will be added up and equally shared.
• Taxes will be deducted from the prize money according to Korean tax laws.
Engagements will be arranged for the first and some other prize winners. These may include concerts, recitals, and recordings for CDs. The first prize winner and other selected prize winners will be required to be available to perform for these engagements. While these performances are not subject to payment of fees to the winners, his/her round-trip, room and board will be paid for a maximum of 7 days during these performances.

INTERPRETATION OF THE RULES AND CONDITIONS

Should any dispute arise regarding the interpretation of any part of the rules and conditions of The Dong-A International Music Competition 1996, the rules and conditions in Korean in this brochure will be the only legal text. All decisions made by the Secretariat, Management Committee, and Jury will be final and not subject to appeal. No correspondence will be entered into.

FIRST STAGE

Competitors must play the pieces specified in ①, ②, ③ and ④ below. The total performance
must be a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 25 minutes duration.

① Mozart one work from Variations
② Chopin one work from Etudes
③ Liszt one work from Etudes
④ one work from Etudes by the following composers, chosen from:
Debussy, Scriabin, Rachmaninov

SECOND STAGE

Competitors must play the pieces specified in ①, ② and ③ below. The works chosen for the 1st Stage must be excluded. The total performance must be a minimum of 40 and maximum of 50 minutes duration.

J.S. Bach one work from the Well-Tempered Clavier
one or several works by the following composers, chosen from:
Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, Rachmaninov
③ YUN I-Sang Fünf Stücke für Klavier

SEMIFINAL

Competitors must perform a recital composed of works of their choice. The programme must include one sonata by Beethoven, and the works chosen for the 1st and 2nd Stages must be excluded. The Jury may request the competitor for the music depending on the work. The complete recital time at this stage must be a minimum of 55 and a maximum of 65 minutes.

Competitors must choose one of the following concertos to play with the orchestra.

NOTICE

1. All works must be played through from memory unless the Jury requests otherwise.
2. Repeats are allowed within the strictly-timed programme.
3. Changes to the submitted programme will be accepted only for the 1st stage and must be notified in writing to the Secretariat no later than 21 October 1996.
4. For all the stages, the order of performance is the competitor’s choice.
5. Applicants must ensure that the timings specified for each stage are not exceeded. The Jury reserves the right to stop competitors who run over the allotted time.
6. No works chosen for a stage may be repeated in another stage.
