He was the 4th leader in Lyric\u2019s 70-year history. A native of the United Kingdom, Freud is internationally recognised for his tenure as General Director of Lyric Opera of Chicago(2011\u20132024), Houston Grand Opera(2006\u20132011), and Welsh National Opera(1994\u20132005). In each role, he advanced major artistic initiatives, strengthened business models, and expanded community engagement programs to reach broader audiences. He is the only person to have served as chair of both Opera America and Opera Europa and is currently an emeritus board member of Opera America, while serving on the boards of Opera North, Opera Rara, and Music Preserved. Freud chaired the jury of the BBC Cardi_ Singer of the World(1995\u20132005) and has served on juries of major international competitions including Neue Stimmen, the Belvedere, Tenor Vi\u00f1as, and the Concours musical International de Montr\u00e9al. He previously served as executive producer for Philips Classics and held senior artistic planning positions at Welsh National Opera. He taught directing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich and worked as a production dramaturge in collaboration with J\u00fcrgen Rose and Christof Loy at the Glyndebourne Festival, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and the Bavarian State Opera, among others. From 2008 to 2021, Heilker was opera director at the Theater St. Gallen where he oversaw a wide-ranging programme of musical theatre encompassing opera, operetta, musicals and dance. His programmes focused particularly on rarely performed works of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as well as world premieres and first performances. As a recitalist, Huang appears regularly at major venues such as Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and the 92nd Street Y. She is a trusted artistic partner to many distinguished singers, known for her stylistic insight, technical mastery, and collaborative artistry. Opera News has praised her as \u201cone of the top accompanists of her generation,\u201d while The New York Times described her as \u201ca coloristic tour de force.\u201d Her Grammy\u00ae-nominated recordings Gods and Monsters and Clairi\u00e8res with tenor Nicholas Phan further affrm her standing as a leading artist of her generation. For 15 years, she served as pianist for the Operalia International Competition under Pl\u00e1cido Domingo, performing in major opera houses across Europe and beyond. She has also been a member of the music staff at Houston Grand Opera, New York City Opera, Washington National Opera, and the Palau de les Arts in Valencia. With broad knowledge of repertoire and production practice, he has shaped artistic direction at several major European opera houses. He served as Artistic Director of Teatro Nacional S\u00e3o Carlos in the 2023\u20132024 season, where he programmed Mahler\u2019s Symphony No.8 in Portugal for the first time in 33 years and presented Robert Carsen\u2019s production of Jenufa. Previously, he led the International Vocal Competition(IVC) in the Netherlands for six years, contributing to the discovery of emerging international talent. He also served as Interim Artistic Director and for ten years as Deputy Artistic Director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, as Opera Director at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, and as Director of Daily Operations at the Hamburg National Theatre. At these institutions, he was involved in opera studio programs for young ensemble singers. He has served on the jury of the Tchaikovsky Competition(2002), the China International Singing Competition, the Bulbul Opera Competition(2020), and the Marie Kraja International Singing Competition(2022), and was instrumental in founding the Cascais Opera Competition.
